THE COLLIE COMPANION

Collie owners vouch for the breed's keen sense of understanding. They are gregarious and inquisitive by nature, and masters at playfulness and pranks. Like many of the herding breeds, collies have exceptional intelligence and sterling character. They excel as faithful, gentle, sweet-natured dogs with a great depth of affection. They love people and have a renowned willingness to bestow affection with an inherent desire to please. Admirers of collies are drawn to their tolerant nature. Collies are by no means timid dogs. Sensing imminent danger, they are instantly alert.

I'd like to share with you a poem from "Collie Concept":

A DOG AND A KID

No one will invent and no one ever did
A happier pair than a dog and a kid.

For doubt can't bedim nor can worry befog
The zestful way of a kid and a dog.

Athrob with adventure, their hearts beat as one,
Their pulses resurge with the rhythm of fun.

They swing into action as impulse may bid,
"Today is the day" for a dog and a kid.

Oh God, clear the pathway along which they jog
And smooth out the bumps for a kid and his dog.

And make of the world that they wander amid
A place truly fit for a dog and a kid.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE COLLIE
The following information is taken from "Collies: A Complete Pet Owner's Manual":

ORIGIN

[Collies originated in the border area of Scotland and Northern England.]...Though its early history is vague, breed historians suppose that dogs introduced by the Roman invaders about 500 B.C. eventually bred with local herding dogs. Later, the agricultural revolution of the mid-eighteenth century gave rise to the selective breeding of domestic animals. When farm animals were confined to walled or fenced pastures, this move from open fields to enclosures had a marked effect on both livestock and the breeding of farmers' dogs. [Two varieties of collies stood out among other shepherd-type dogs--the rough- and smooth-coated collie.] The collies were used for herding and as guardians and later as companians and show dogs. With broad, short heads and heavy ears, the early collies were smaller than the modern one that began to emerge around 1886.

ROUGH & SMOOTH VARIETIES

In addition to the well-known "Lassie"-type of collie, there is a smooth variety. In smooth collies the coat is short and dense, and requires much less grooming. Sometimes, smooth collies appear smaller because of the difference in coat, but they are actually identical to their rough brothers and sisters and have the same kindly temperament and intelligence. It is an open question whether the smooth collie was a parellel development of the rough collie or was developed as a separate breed. The rough specialized in sheep, while the smooth was used extensively with cattle. Generations of the careful breedinghave turned the collie into the beautiful specimen it is today, with the rough's elegant coat and the smooth's distinctive outline, increased size, and tulip ears.
